Every few months, social media braces itself as if the sky itself has malfunctioned. But Mercury retrograde is neither rare nor apocalyptic — it happens three to four times a year and is best understood as a regular rhythm of review in both astronomy and astrology.

The astronomy first

Mercury never actually reverses orbit. Because Earth also moves, when we "overtake" Mercury on the inside track, it appears — from our viewpoint — to slow, stop and slide backwards against the zodiac for about three weeks. Ancient astronomers called this vakra gati (crooked motion) and knew it was an apparent motion long before telescopes.

Why astrologers still care

In Vedic astrology, Mercury (Budha) governs intellect, speech, contracts, commerce and computation. When its motion appears reversed, the symbolism is straightforward: processes ruled by Mercury tend to need a second pass. Not catastrophe — revision.

What retrograde is good for

  • Re-words: revise, renegotiate, repair, reconnect. Old friends resurface; stalled deals deserve a fresh look.
  • Edit before you publish; proofread twice; back up your data (this one's just good practice).
  • Journaling and retrospection flow unusually well now.

What to hold off on (if you can)

  • Signing major contracts without extra scrutiny — read every clause.
  • Launching brand-new ventures or products when possible timing exists.
  • Making irreversible decisions while emotionally charged — sleep on it.
"Retrogrades don't create problems; they reveal loose threads you'd otherwise have missed until later."

The shadow periods

Astrologers also watch the shadow: roughly two weeks before and after the retrograde itself, while Mercury traverses the degrees it will re-cover. If you notice confusion building gradually rather than suddenly, that's why. The full cycle: pre-shadow → retrograde → post-shadow → clear skies.

Your five-line survival checklist

  1. Double-check travel documents and bookings.
  2. Reread emails once before sending.
  3. Schedule device backups for the week before.
  4. Park big launches just outside the window if flexible.
  5. Use the pause: revisit one abandoned idea per retrograde.
