Long before dating apps, Vedic astrologers built a systematic compatibility framework called Kundli Milan (or guna milan). Done well, it isn't superstition — it's a structured conversation about temperament, values and timing between two people. Done badly, it's a number on a scorecard used to reject wonderful matches. Here's how to do it well.
The famous 36 points (ashtakoota)
The classical system compares the Moon charts of both partners across eight kootas:
| Koota | Weighs | Max points |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | Spiritual compatibility | 1 |
| Vashya | Mutual influence | 2 |
| Tara | Health & fortune of each other | 3 |
| Yoni | Physical & instinctive rapport | 4 |
| Graha Maitri | Mental friendship | 5 |
| Gana | Temperament match | 6 |
| Bhakoot | Family & prosperity harmony | 7 |
| Nadi | Health of progeny, genetic compatibility | 8 |
A score above 18/36 is traditionally considered workable. But the raw total is the least interesting part — a 24 with broken Nadi and Bhakoot needs more attention than an 18 with even distribution.
What the score can't see
- Venus and Mars placements — romance and drive live in these, not the Moon alone.
- The 7th houses of both charts — what kind of partnership each person is built for.
- Dasha overlap — two people can be deeply compatible yet marry during turbulent personal periods.
- Character. Astrology describes weather, not the sailor. No chart excuses unkindness.
Mangal dosha without the panic
Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house is labelled mangal dosha. In reality: it occurs in a large share of all charts, its effects soften dramatically with age, Jupiter's aspect cancels much of it, and matching one manglik with another often balances it entirely. If it appears, get a nuanced reading before ruling anyone out.
"A chart match is like checking the map before a journey. You still have to drive the car — kindly, every day."
Our approach at Karmic Jyotish
In our Relationship & Compatibility sessions, we read both full charts — not just Moons — then sit with both partners together. The goal is never to accept or reject on points alone, but to highlight where friction may arise and give practical tools for it. That's why our Kundli Milan consultations end with a joint conversation, not just a score.
