Vastu shastra is often presented as an all-or-nothing science of architecture — as if your flat's fixed walls doom you to misfortune. In practice, vastu works beautifully as a set of sensible spatial hygiene principles: light, flow, orientation and intention. Here are five adjustments that need no demolition, no renovation, and no superstition.

1. Make your entrance worthy of welcome

In vastu, the main door is the mouth of energy. Keep it clean, well-lit and unobstructed; fix squeaks promptly; and avoid storing shoes, bins or broken items directly outside it. A fresh doormat and a working nameplate do more than most expensive "cures". A bright entrance sets the tone for everyone who walks in — including you.

2. Mind the mirrors

Mirrors double whatever they face. Facing the bed, they're said to disturb rest; facing the entry, they push entering energy straight back out. Position mirrors to reflect light, greenery or open space instead — visually doubling the best parts of the room.

3. Let the north-east stay light

The Ishaan corner (north-east) traditionally belongs to clarity and water. Keep it the cleanest, brightest zone of the home — ideal for a prayer corner, a water feature or simply a window left uncluttered. Heavy storage belongs in the south-west instead, which vastu treats as the zone of stability.

4. Bring in living things

Fresh plants (especially tulsi, money plant, bamboo) lift both air quality and mood — but remove dying ones within a day. Dried flowers and dead leaves represent stagnation; vastu asks you to curate, not accumulate. If you travel often, choose hardy varieties rather than keeping perpetual casualties.

5. Declutter one zone at a time

The most powerful vastu remedy costs nothing: remove what's broken, expired or unused. Cluttered corners correspond to stalled areas of life in the vastu mapping. Start with the north-east and the space behind doors — two spots that silently collect the past.

"A home doesn't need perfect geometry to feel good. It needs light, order and a clear welcome."

A gentle weekly rhythm

  1. Saturday: sweep the entrance and threshold.
  2. Sunday: ten minutes of decluttering, one drawer or shelf.
  3. Midweek: water and wipe plant leaves; discard anything dead.
